Karen Hutchins grew up in South Bend, IN where she learned to play the violin, viola, and piano and played viola in the South Bend Symphony Orchestra before attending graduate school. She decided to major in science rather than music since she knew that would enable her to enjoy both of her favorite subjects at a high level.
After moving to Indianapolis, Karen joined the Carmel Symphony in 1996 and has enjoyed playing in the viola section ever since. The violas have great camaraderie and socialize outside of rehearsal, enhancing their shared musical experience.
Newly retired from her primary job as a Radiation Oncology physicist, she hopes to increase her playing opportunities and volunteer as a tutor at IPS science magnet schools. In addition to music and science, Karen enjoys spending time at their lake cottage in Michigan, gardening, knitting, and reading.
